STORAGE TIPS & FAQ

PACKING TIPS

  • For easy stacking, use the same size boxes.
  • When wrapping collectibles or anything breakable, tape it after you wrap it.
  • Mark “fragile” on all boxes containing breakable items.
  • To prevent moth damage when storing wool items, use cedar chips or mothballs.
  • Use a wardrobe carton to pack clothing that usually hangs in a closet.
  • Furniture with drawers can be used to store pictures, china, silverware and other small items. Wrap them in tablecloths, towels, bubble wrap or packing paper to prevent breakage.
  • Larger appliances are great for storing blankets, towels, clothes and linens.
  • Empty trash cans can be used to store rakes, shovels and hoses.
  • Protect mattresses and furniture with pads and covers.
  • Wrap mirrors and pictures with paper pads or use mirror boxes.
  • Pack heavy items like books in smaller boxes for easier lifting.
  • Seal boxes completely with packing tape to keep out dust.
  • Label boxes by numbers and keep a master storage inventory list at home, separate from your storage unit. Label boxes on all four sides.

STORAGE TIPS

  • Before you move items into your unit, place plastic sheets, tarps or pallets on the floor.
  • Allow for proper ventilation by not packing items right up against the walls.
  • Leave a center aisle so you’ll have easy access to all of your items.
  • Store items you think you’ll need most often at the front of your unit.
  • Place heavy boxes on the bottom when stacking.
  • Store couches (except sofa beds) on end to maximize space.
  • Do not store mirrors and pictures flat.
  • Stacking uniform boxes helps maximize available space. Don’t stack higher than you can comfortably reach.
  • Do not place heavy or sharp objects on top of upholstered furniture.
  • Disassemble tables and store on their sides.
  • Mattresses should be covered and stored flat on level surfaces.
  • Use shelving to maximize the space in your unit.
  • Refrigerators and freezers should be cleaned before storing. Keep their doors slightly ajar, and use the inside for extra storage.
  • Wax wooden furniture before storing it. Place a light cotton dust cover (like a sheet) on your furniture.
  • Valuables should be stored at the rear of your unit.
